Bahrain automates work permit renewals for Golden Residency holders

Bahrain's Labour Market Regulatory Authority has automated the renewal of work permits held by Golden Residency holders, replacing a process that took up to ten working days with one the authority describes as immediate. The change was announced on 30 August 2026 by Ahmed Al Arabi, the LMRA's deputy chief executive officer for operations and services, who said the required documentation has been halved and that permits can now be renewed for six months, one year or two years. For foreign professionals and investors holding Bahrain's ten-year residence, it removes a recurring piece of administration that has to be cleared before a permit lapses.

Background

Bahrain launched its Golden Residency in 2022 as a ten-year renewable residence permit aimed at long-term investors, highly skilled professionals and retirees, with the right to work and to sponsor immediate family. The residence itself is issued by the Nationality, Passports and Residence Affairs directorate. The right to be employed, however, runs through a separate work permit administered by the LMRA under Decision No. 76 of 2008, and that permit has its own expiry date. In practice this has meant Golden Residency holders and their employers managing two clocks at once: the ten-year residence, and a work permit renewed in much shorter cycles.

What exactly changed

According to the LMRA, the renewal service has been rebuilt so that an application that previously took up to ten working days is now handled by an immediate automated process. The documents an employer has to supply have been cut by 50 per cent, the service level agreement has been shortened by 25 per cent, and the number of internal approvals needed to complete a renewal has also been reduced by 25 per cent. The number of steps in the application has been reduced and the service has been fully digitised. Renewals can be filed before the existing permit expires — LMRA's published guidance allows an employer to start six months ahead — and the permit can now be renewed for six months, one year or two years. Al Arabi said the work "will contribute to enhancing the efficiency of services provided, streamlining procedures and improving the beneficiary experience."

Who it affects

This is a change for people already in Bahrain, not a change to who can get in. It matters most to two groups. The first is the Golden Residency holder in salaried employment — for instance a professional who qualified on the basis of five years in Bahrain and an average monthly basic salary above BHD 2,000 — whose ability to keep working depends on the employer filing the renewal in time. The second is the employer or authorised company representative who actually submits it, since the LMRA service is employer-facing rather than something the individual files themselves. The new six-month renewal term also suits anyone on a fixed-term contract who does not want to commit to a full year. It does not affect the residence permit itself, and it does not change the eligibility thresholds for Golden Residency, which include property holdings of BHD 130,000 or more for the investor route.

What to do now

Check the expiry date on your work permit rather than on your residence card, and confirm with your employer who is responsible for filing the renewal. One caveat is worth knowing before you rely on the new terms: as of publication, LMRA's own service pages still listed processing times of three working days at the counter and one working day for the remote service, and still offered only one-year and two-year renewal options.
