New Zealand moves most visitor visa applications to its new online system from 24 September

Immigration New Zealand announced on 11 August 2026 that new applications for most visitor visa categories will have to be submitted through its newer platform, enhanced Immigration Online, from 24 September 2026. The change covers 20 visitor visa types, from the standard Visitor Visa to the Parent and Grandparent Visitor Visa, and comes with a hard deadline: on 8 October 2026 the affected application forms close in the old system and any draft application that has not been submitted by then will be deleted. Applications that have already been submitted are not affected and will keep being processed as normal.

Background

Immigration New Zealand has been moving its visa products from the legacy Immigration Online system to a rebuilt platform in stages for more than a year, category by category, under a programme it calls Our Future Services. Group visitor visas are next in line: the Approved Destination Status (ADS) Group Visitor Visa, the Group Visitor Visa and the Tour Escort Visitor Visa move to the enhanced system on 24 August 2026, a step INZ had already announced in July. The 11 August announcement sets the date for the much larger wave — the visitor visa categories that individual travellers, family visitors and business visitors actually use.

What exactly changed

From 24 September 2026, you will no longer be able to create a new application in the old system for the affected categories; new applications must go through enhanced Immigration Online. The list of 20 categories includes the Visitor Visa, Business Visitor Visa, Academic Visitor Visa, Guardian Visitor Visa, Medical Treatment Visitor Visa, Parent and Grandparent Visitor Visa, Occupational Registration Visitor Visa, Culturally Arranged Marriage Visitor Visa, and more specialised types such as the Sports Events, Super Yachts, Private Yacht or Plane, Visiting Media and Crew Joining a Ship or Plane visitor visas. There is a transition buffer for work already started: existing drafts in the old system can still be completed and submitted until 8 October 2026. On that date the forms close and remaining drafts are deleted outright.

Who it affects

The widest group is anyone from a visa-required country planning a New Zealand visit — tourists, people visiting family, and business visitors. Someone who started a visitor visa application in the old system but has not submitted it — for example, a family gathering documents for a parent’s visit over several weeks — is the person this deadline actually bites: an unfinished draft still sitting there on 8 October disappears, and the application has to be started again from scratch in the new system.

What this means in practice

If you have a draft visitor visa application in the old Immigration Online system, finish and submit it before 8 October 2026, or plan to re-enter everything in the new platform afterwards. If you are applying fresh after 24 September, the enhanced system is simply where you apply; INZ describes it as having a new application form and an improved user experience. If your application is already submitted, nothing changes — you keep access to the old system to upload documents and respond to INZ requests until your application is decided.
