Kuwait's Ministry of Interior announced on 20 August that the regular legal periods for entry visas and absence permits will be reinstated from 1 September 2026. Background
The extensions date to March 2026, when Kuwait and several neighbouring states closed or heavily restricted their airspace during the regional military escalation. Flights were cancelled at scale and residents who happened to be abroad could not get back before their permitted absence ran out. The Ministry of Interior responded on 10 March with two blanket measures: a one-month automatic extension for all visit visas expiring on or after 28 February 2026, and an automatic three-month absence permit for residents outside Kuwait who had already exceeded their allowed time away. Both were applied automatically and electronically, with no visit to residency affairs departments, and with full exemption from the prescribed fees and any resulting fines. The ministry said at the time that the periods might be extended again depending on developments. They were, repeatedly, until now.
What exactly changed
From 1 September the automatic extension of all categories of visit visa ends, and the standard legal validity periods, procedures and regulations come back into force. Visitors currently in Kuwait need to either leave or complete the normal legal steps before their visa expires, rather than relying on an extension that arrives by itself. For residents abroad, the ordinary absence periods resume. Those limits come from Ministerial Decision No. 2249 of 2025: a residency permit is generally at risk once the holder has spent more than six consecutive months outside Kuwait, while domestic workers on Article 20 permits are held to four months unless the sponsor obtains approved leave through residency affairs departments or the Sahel app. Investors, property owners and children of Kuwaiti women have specific exemptions. The ministry also named the document that settles any dispute about dates: the residency permit certificate issued through the Sahel app is the official and approved reference for when a resident's permitted absence expires.

From there the arithmetic is simple: count forward from the departure date and compare it against the applicable limit. Anyone whose absence would cross the line shortly after 1 September has a narrow window in which departing before 31 August materially changes their position, and anyone already close to the limit should be planning a return rather than assuming another extension will arrive.
